Have your say on the Electoral Boundary Review for Bancroft

Have your say on the Electoral Boundary Review for Bancroft Main Image

By Chris Whiting

11 September 2025

There are currently 93 electorates in Queensland. As people move into and around Queensland, the boundaries of electorates need to be reviewed and adjusted so each electorate has a similar number of voters. This makes sure each Queenslander’s vote carries equal weight in elections.

The process of reviewing and adjusting electoral boundaries is known as a redistribution. The Electoral Act 1992 establishes an independent body called the Queensland Redistribution Commission (QRC) to perform redistributions.

The current redistribution was triggered in December 2024 because 7.5 years had passed since the last redistribution became final in June 2017.

Multiple stages of public consultation are part of the redistribution process.

Consultation process

The electoral redistribution will include four stages of community consultation as required by the Electoral Act 1992. During consultation periods, the public and stakeholders will be able to make suggestions, comments and/or objections on the redistribution.

The four stages of public consultation are:

  1. Invite suggestions [Closed 6 August 2025]

  2. Invite comments on suggestions [Now open. Closing 22 September 2025]

  3. Invite objections to the proposed redistribution [Not yet started]

  4. Invite comments on the objections to the proposed redistribution [Not yet started]

Members of the public are encouraged to participate in the consultation process. The commencement of each stage of consultation is publicly notified through the Queensland Government Gazette.

Members of the public can also register for notifications about the commencement of consultation using the form on the on the QRC site.

Suggestions for Bancroft

As well as boundary adjustments, it has been proposed by the current state government to change the Bancroft electorate name to "Deception Bay" in order to prioritise recognisable geographic features over less familiar historical references.

Locals are encouraged to provide feedback on this change to the redistribution panel via the link below.

Suggestions on the redistribution

The first stage of consultation on the redistribution was conducted over a 30-day period from 7 July to 6 August 2025.

A total of 116 submissions were made. You can:

  • Read the overview and list of submissions
  • Provide your feedback on the suggestions — closing on 22 September 2025

The new electorates will come into effect for the next State general election in 2028.
